I originally asked about carriers with symptoms because my 16 yo daughter’s 17 OHP is in carrier range. She has high free and total testosterone, along with acne, irregular (very scanty) periods, and mild hirsutism. She also complains of being tired all the time and of bad memory. You asked about testing for PCOS and insulin resistance; she’s had a pelvic ultrasound done, which was normal, and fasting insulin was normal. She is not overweight (also thyroid testing is normal). The only test that does look like PCOS is that her LH levels run 2-3 times FSH. The gyn diagnosed "probable PCOS" and gave her progesterone to start her period before starting her on Yasmin. Nothing happened, which indicates low estrogen (PCOS usually has high estrogen). Anyway, she took Yasmin for 6 months, which did make her feel better and brought her testosterone levels down, but not in the normal range. Then she was off Yasmin for 6 mos. while we saw an endo and finally got LOCAH testing done. Now she is back on Yasmin, but I really would like her to try a low dose of prednisone or hydrocortisone, but I need evidence that carriers sometimes have symptoms and need treatment to convince a dr. Any thoughts?
