I hope she doesn’t have too severe a case although it sounds pretty bad already from your description.  Maybe it worked in Japan because everybody got the shot (I don’t know if everyone did in Japan but it’s just an idea).  If everyone gets it then maybe no one is around to start spreading it.  There are mini-epidemics of things like diptheria now because some people don’t want to vaccinate their kids.
