DianaI agree with Cherry Lane Research ... Research ... Research.... I went to 3 different childrens’ hospitals and all offered to do my daughters surgery. It was important to me to find a Dr who had recent experience and was using current techniques. It makes a big difference on the level of virilazition and how severe the reconstruction will be. Several different techniques are used depending on the anatomical findings. What I am trying to say is that all Drs do not necessary have experience with all the techniques. It would depend on the type of reconstructions they have done in the past. Some of these surgeries, on the lower or mid prader scale may take a couple of hours. Other surgeries, like my daughters was, are more complex and take 8 hours to complete. It is almost impossible to find many Drs with this level of experience simply because there are not a lot of children at this high degree. All children do not present at the same level and all Drs do not have necessarily have experience with all the levels.
Contact www.caresfoundation.org they have information on Drs with experience. Also if you have the opportunity to read the book Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, A Parents’ Guide, it has a very good section on reconstructive surgery explaining the different types of surgeries and varying degrees.
I personally have no experience with CHOPS and so can not give any comment on there experience or level of care.
A decision does not have to be made immediately. Take your time and check out all the resources available. My daughter was 3 yrs old when Dr Poppas in NewYork did her surgery last June. We are very pleased with his expertise.
There are great Drs available so I am sure you will find the right one for your daughter. Good luck and let us know how she makes out. If you need some support during or after surgery please post.
