This is a hard decision to make and I feel for you. What I found in my research when we were making our decision ...

It is difficult to judge function of women who in the past had surgery, compared to what our daughters will experience. This is because surgical techniques today are different. It is my understanding that current techniques have been used for aproximately 10 years so it will be at least 5 years till a firm study can be done on the outcome of current surgery.

It is so important to ask the questions, how many...how often...how severe the virilizations....what techniques will the surgeon use??? We saw several Drs on our quest for the right surgeon. One offered to do the surgery, told me he was confident in his ability and skills....he was going to use bowel tissue for the vaginal reconstruction....not the technique that should be used in my daughters case, another told me he had recently watched a video on current techniques but not done one as severe as my daugther, he too was prepared to do the surgery. It is important to find a well qualified, experienced surgeon as this is to important not to be done correctly. No going back after surgery....

We finally found the right surgeon and I am confident that the outcome for our daughter will be positive. She had her surgery last June.

Post op pain is well managed. My daughter complained about the IV in her hand but said nothing about the actual surgical site. At three she is very vocal and I’m sure would have complained if she was in any pain. After surgery it was amazing how quickly she was charging around and back to her regular self.

Hope this helps!!
