I left a full-time job with excellent benefits when my daughter with SWCAH was born 9 years ago.  I had planned to go back, but knew it wouldn’t work with all the hospital/Dr visits.  I had saved enough money for us to get by for 6 months or so.  Then I started babysitting in my home-did that for almost 7 yrs, and that’s how we got by.  The moms knew that if my daughter was sick they had to get a backup.  When my daughter entered 1st grade I started working full-time again.  Luckily they are very understanding at my job.  Also, my husband and I would switch off-he would leave early and I’d go in late to cover the day being home.  Three years later and I still have the job.  It’s crazy sometimes, but somehow we work it out.  It’s just me and my husband too-we do not live near any family.  Good Luck-I know it can be hard.
