bonnieMy son (11-yrs-old) has a school mate who I suspect may have a disease - gigantism. He’s in 5th grade and he’s already about 5’7" - 5’8". He’s about a foot taller than most kids his age. He’s taller than his father already and his older brother - a high school junior - is maybe 5’11". I looked it up online and symptoms of this disease include (besides being huge) are widely spaced teeth (which he has) and coarse features which he may also have.
His father once mentioned to me that his pediatrician is someone whose kids also go to school with our kids and I don’t think she’s very good. She screwed up a diagnosis on my son recently.
Do you think it’s possible that they wouldn’t have checked him for something this obvious? If they haven’t, the disease is most likely caused by a tumor of the pituatary and could be really serious - as if the prospect of looking like "Jaws" in James Bond isn’t serious enough. The internet also says the disease is extremely rare.
Would he get mad at me for bringing it up? Our sons are going to be on a travel baseball team this summer and we’ll be together constantly.
