That’s interesting. I knew they used it in Australia, but I wasn’t aware it was used that way in the UK. We Yanks get in trouble in the UK when we call out trousers, pants. In the US we us "friend" and "good friend" when we want to show it’s a closer relationship, that’s still friendship.
