re: CAH and insulin resistance

I have to stop reading about insulin resistance because I am just scaring myself. Alyssa is not obese, is very active (she was on the track team this season and plays tennis 1-2 times a week) and yet she has really high glucose/insulin levels. I wish I understood the link with CAH better, but it sure points to a need for better more research on the disease and its impact on the body. Dr. Merke’s study on CAH and insulin levels and treatment with Metformin should begin in the fall.
I am going to ask Alyssa’s doctor about a sonogram of her ovaries to see if she has visible cysts. I hope the insulin resistance is not due to her developing, at this very early age, PCOS. All I can say, is just do the fasting glucose tolerance test if you have any suspicion that there might be a problem. I’m not sure why I asked for it for Alyssa--was it being a neurotic mom who reads too much about these complications of CAH, or motherly intuition? I also asked for a bone density scan and Alyssa’s BD was slightly below normal. The upside is she is finally drinking her milk and taking her calcium pills regularly.

2006 has been such a hard year for me and my family, with the fire and rebuilding CARES, two surgeries in the past month, my father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer and now Alyssa having insulin resistance. I keep thinking its got to get better, and whammy--another hit. I suppose all I can do is roll with the punches. Sorry to complain....
