I always got my syringes from the pharmacy for free.  Often they offered them or I would ask.  Additionally I found the best ones were from hospital stays when they brought the meds I would save the syringe.  Definately not a good reason for a hospital stay but you have to make the best of every situation.

With my daughter we used the syringe directly, with my son we employed the nipple ring method described earlier.  Both were equally effective.
