MHHi Misty,
We deal with the "hydration" issue on a daily basis. Our son goes to public school and then goes to an afterschool program. We keep Gatorade and salty snacks in both places. When he goes outside at regular school for recess and at afterschool he must take a gatorade with him. The teachers know that if his face becomes red that he is to sit out and cool down. He usually drinks about 1/2 to a whole small gatorade at recess since it is only 30 minutes of play . At afterschool they go out in the afternoon when it is hotter and he may drink another whole small gatorade or a large one depending on the heat index. He also drink lots of water from the water fountain once he gets inside. When he is home with us we are contantly monitoring his fluid intake. We encourage him to drink and he does not mind. He can drink 12 ounces of gatorade or a juice pack in less than 2 minutes. We also make him drink a full cup of milk or orange juice at breakfast and at dinner. Sometime I feel like we are obsessive about his drinking but fluid intake when he is "pre-crisis" has saved him. We could do a commercial for gatorade!
Our son also goes to summer camps. We try to pick camps that are indoor like indoor soccer camps, basketball, indoor sports camps. ice skating, etc but he has gone to a YMCA camp for a couple of summers now. The director of the camp knows the details of his condition and we school anyone who cares for him on his disorder. We also have a "How to take care of me" sheet that tells them exactly what to do for each type of stress (diarrhea, vomiting, fever, lethargy, etc). We send lots of gatorade and water in a cooler with him to these camps and make sure the counselors know that the gatorade and water are as much a "medication" as the Cortef..
Hope this helps!
