re: school letter

Hi Teresa,

I am in the same position. My 5 yr old is starting Kindergarten in August and I asked my endo to give me info for the school.  The  endo nurse sent the same 3 page letter she sent me regarding what he has and how it is treated and how much meds per day he takes and how to double or triple based on certain things and when to give solu cortef. The nurse took one look and said...this is great but if I’m not here, I don’t want whoever is here to have to figure out what his afternoon dose is then if they should double or triple. In an emergency that is just too much info, too many pages to look through.

Instead I went to the CARES foundation website www.caresfoundation.org  and got their simple letter and modified it some.   Basically, now it’s a one page letter saying that he has CAH or adrenal insufficiency. It has my numbers, my husbands, the endos number too.

It says something like during the school day for the following, and I listed fever, throwing up and other stuff give ______cortef.  The endo filled out one stress amount that she wanted to use. I then went on and said for severe injuries or stress and I listed a few, administer ________solucortef. The endo again filled that in.  At the bottom, I wrote.... cortef may be administered for other injuries and/or illness and/or at the parent’s discretion up to _____mg/day.  The endo filled that in and signed the paper.

So, now the nurse knows exactly how much to give and if I ever, well not me but my husband, forget to give him  his morning meds, I can call the school and ask them to give him his meds.

I didn’t feel that I needed to go into detail about what the condition is about, rather that he needs the meds to supplement what he doesn’t make and that if he is in trouble he needs extra.

I’ll probably go into a little more detail with his teacher because she will have him most of the day. Luckily for me, she taught my 1st son in kinder too, so we know each other really well.

Good luck to you and don’t worry. Once the initial stress of getting it all together and after the first few weeks of school, it will be easier.

Sandra
