re: TEENAGE CAH KIDS/GOING OUT WITH FRIENDS/TAKING THEIR MEDS
Jul. 20th, 2006   12:11am

I can’t comment on CAH meds as my Granddaughter is only 5 and we have not crossed this path ....YET! I will say that when my son was a teenager and took meds for ADHD he reached a point when he did not want any of his peers KNOWING he was on meds. At this age they want to be just like there peers and want nothing about them to be different. This was back in the 80’s....... Of course not taking ADHD meds would not have the serious consequences of not taking your meds for CAH. You have to let them make the decision for themselves and educate them on WHAT WILL HAPPEN if they make the wrong choice. Ask them how they feel about it? Do they want to be discreet or upfront with there friends? Let them KNOW you value there input about there health decisions and let them feel they are in control of there health and meds. After a certain age they will be anyway! Thank God today is different and taking meds is no big deal now. But ANYTHING DIFFERENT is a BIG deal to a teenager.  The more you push it the more they will fight it.  This is what teenagers do......so give them the choice  and there will be no power struggle.......hopefully.
