re: amniocentosis

I believe the doctors should test the father to see if he is a carrier for CAH. If he is not a carrier than the baby will not have CAH but will be a carrier for CAH. If the father is a carrier than the baby has a 50% chance of having CAH and 50% chance of being a carrier.

How far along is your daughter? In order to prevent virilization in girls with CAH in utero the dex should be started as soon as you know you are pregnant. The earlier the better as the genitals are formed early in the development of the baby. If the mom is newly pregnant she may want to start on dex now but if she is far enough along to have an amnio it might be too late for dex to be beneficial to the baby in regards to preventing virilization. I have not heard of treating babies in utero for any other reason than this.

If she is further along she may still want an amnio; knowing if the baby has CAH might be good to be prepared but doctors can also test when the baby is born and find out that way without any risk to the baby.

Your daughter should discuss all this with a doctor that is knowlegable in CAH. Good luck. Julia
