My son is 2 years old and I took the dex during my pregnancy with him until we found out that he was a boy and then I stopped taking it. (Our first child was a daughter with SWCAH) But I talked to the genetic counselor at Cornell several times before we actually got pregnant just so I could have everything in order. At the time it was Ann Carlson, I believe someone has taken her place but they still should have someone you could call. It was my understanding that Dr. New is the one that came up with this whole idea of taking dex during pregnancy, so that is why I called them. They actually told me and my OB-GYN the amount to take and then my OB-GYN gave me the prescription based on what Cornell said. I know some people think that the practice of using dex to prevent virilization in CAH girls has not been around long enough to really know if there will be long term effects, therefore they do not recommend it. But the data available at the time that I did it seemed promising that the baby would not suffer any long term effects of being exposed to the dex, and already having gone through surgery with my daughter, I felt like it was the right thing to do. There is just so much involved with what to do and not to do when you have a little girl that is virilized. Having to make the decision to have surgery or not, will the doctor do the right thing, will she have to have a surgery later in adolescence, and so on. So to prevent all of that, I took the dex just in case we were having another girl. I wanted to save her from having to face surgery if I could. And I would do it again now if I planned on another pregnancy. You just have to gather as much information as you can (from knowlegable sources) and make the decision that you feel most comfortable with.  Good Luck! And by the way, my son is a perfectly happy, healthy little boy who shows no ill effects of being exposed to the dex for the time that I took it.  And it turned out that he does have SWCAH. I wish you the best!!
