re: 29 yr old adult with SWCAH on Decadron thinking of switching to hydrocortisone

I like your statement "well we do grow up" and I do appreciate the lack of understanding of CAH among adult endo’s - although hopefully it is changing gradually.

Whenever I have had thyroids tested in the past it was done via a blood level but I went to an anti-ageing specialist a couple of years ago who did a huge panel of urinary testing. When I had that done my T3’s came back low, although T4’s were ok.

On the sheet that comes explaining all the comprehensive testing and results this is what was written:

"LOW URINARY T3  Causes:

Endocrine causes - High oestrogens, high cortisol. Low T4, low GH (Growth Hormone), low androgens.

Drugs - antiinflammatory, antidepressants, lipid drugs, cardiac drugs, high soy.

It may also be due to cortisol excess, global nutritional deficiency, or T3 to T4 conversion problems. These conversion problems are caused by iron, selenium, iodine, growth hormone and androgen deficiencies or cortisol and oestogen excess.

Low levels of T3 indicate thyroid hormone deficiency and thyroid therapy is recommended".

When you started on the Armour did they start you on a very low dose and get you to gradually build up? If the dose is too high initially you do get horrible palpitations. I have been grading up for nearly two years and think I am on high enough of a dose now.

I found a very good website which discusses some of this a while ago. I’ll have to see if I can find it again.
