LauraWe were told by our endocrinologist ped. that you need to watch your Gatorade intake because it can cause weight gain if used in replace of water ALL day. I too would send Gatorade to school with my daugher on hot days for lunch. But always send her with a gigantic water bottle for the rest of the day. I figured if she drinks the Gatroade before going out for lunch that should help her. ALSO, we have found with our own experience too much brings on the poopies. And if it is a blue drink, BLUE poopies. Isn’t mother hood exciting? So be careful. Too much of anything isn’t good. Also be sure to pack salty foods with her. That can be beneficial too just as the Gatorade.
I also empowered my daughter with a talk. She did get really drained one day at recess. The school nurse called me. She came in with a headache. My daughter told me she was running around and got REALLY sweaty and hot so she then stood in the shade and but just couldn’t cool down. SO I sat her down and had a talk with her. I said, "Ok, you know you have some limits with your CAH. You now know those limits and that is you can’t tolerate the extreme heat and running around in it that well. So on hot days limit your crazy sprints across the playground. Don’t be a crazy monkey woman at recess when it is that hot out. REST when you first feel heated. LISTEN to what your body is telling you." Thus far she has done really good. She enters the third grade this year. I believe it is never too early to start empowering them with listening to their bodies needs. You are training them to care for themselves in the future. Never scare them, just empower them. I will have my reminder talk with her next week as school starts in this hot weather.
