natalieYes, CAH kids do get their private parts checked more thoroughly than non-CAH kids. I remember when my son was about 3yrs old and he was so uncomfortable when a doc measured his penis with a little ruler. My girls were always checked as well and it was extremely uncomfortable, especially when they got older. I always told my children that docs have to look at every part of our bodies to make sure we are growing and are healthy. I acknowledged the embarrassment but maintained a factual attitude that your private parts much be checked out just like when they feel your belly, listen to your heart, etc. I frequently acknowledged the embarrassment in front of the doctor while they were doing the examination (I always stood right next to my children and held their hands). I always reminded them that it was OK for a doctor to look at their private parts ONLY when Mom or Dad were right here next to them. The doctors usually would say that this is just part of the examination and that it is OK because they were a doc and because mom or dad were there. But NEVER let anyone else look at your private parts, because they are PRIVATE!!!!
Playing doctor: Well that is a pretty normal make believe game to play, but kids do need to be watched. With many CAH kids there is a preoccupation with sexuality, especially LOCAH when the kids aren’t diagnosed until later and their hormones have ravaged on!!!
Just frequently remind your kids that private parts are called private because they are to be kept PRIVATE!!!
