Here in the UK renin is measured at different centres in different units, however there are two ways they test it:- Renin - ambulant (blood sample taken not resting) and Renin recumbent which is sample taken after laying down flat for two hours, the latter result shows a lower reading. My son has had them both done, sample after resting for two hours, then walking for an hour then another sample. Shows quite a different reading. I have found that doctors do not seem to agree with what is always printed out by the labs. as normal levels. I guess they look at other things too such a blood pressure
As for 17 OHP, again in the UK different centres have different levels they want to achieve. Here they measure in mnol/ls and the centres can vary tremendously. I think it is important to look at the individual person and how well they are doing and feeling. Also the early morning 17 OHP taken before the dose is higher than the rest of the day, some centres up to 60 mnol/ls and some 30 mnol/ls some even 5 mnol/ls, the rest of the day the level they want to achieve is normally below 10 mnol/ls (again different for different centres)
I do find it hard to get my head around the fact that there is such a wide range of opinions with endo’s in the treatment of CAH but I have come to the conclusion that this is because it is such an individual disorder and other things such as growth, weight and general well being comes into the equation. Does not make it easy to understand though!
Of course there all the other hormones that are tested LH and FSH. Testosterone is variable too as to what time of the day it is taken.
