LynnTWhen my son was 5 years old (after some bad medicine batches that didn’t suppress his OHP levels) he began to go into puberty and his bones aged to that of a 10 year old in one year. When the doctors finally realized what was going on he had lost about 5 years of growth. They anticipated his final height to be 4’9" max.
My husband and I struggled with the decision as to put him on the Growth Hormone program at Cornell. We researched what we could, spoke with many people who had already done this, called many different doctors and prayed for an answer. We ended up going into the program knowing that we could stop at any time. He, like Beth’s daughter, had to also take a monthly Lupron shot to keep him out of puberty and to prevent his bones from completely fusing.
Long story short, he is now 11 years old, gives himself the shots nightly and is measuring in close to 5’4". His doctors anticipate a minimum final height of 5’8" - 5’9" depending upon when we stop the protocol.
My son is very happy with the outcome and we have left it up to him (within reason) as to when he stops taking the shots. Currently he wishes to continue. He has regular bone scans and blood work and there have been no adverse side effects to date.
I hope this information helps you.
