You are correct about the androgens, however the gene that is deleted (DAX1) also plays a big role in the communication between the pituitary gland and the gonads.  Since my boys do not have this gene the communication is compromised which leads to lack of testosterone production- at least that is what I understand from the docs and all of the medical papers that I have found on line.
