re: Random vomiting - 1 year old SWCAH boy

Thank you all for your replies. It’s nice to know we’re not the only ones with a child that has a sensitive gag reflex.

Aidan never had any problems as a baby as far as reflux or with breast milk or formula (I BF until he was 6 mos old). He also did well when we started cereal at 5 months and baby food at 6 month’s. It’s when we started to give him things like Puffs, Stage 3 foods, crackers, baby cookies, etc., that he would gag and vomit. So I got scared and stopped offering him that stuff. I’m wondering if part of this problem is my fault. I’ve had a few episodes where I’ve freaked out b/c of his gagging. I don’t do that any more because I don’t want to scare him. Now that he’s nearly one, he eats Stage 3 foods fine and also can eat Puffs, diced fruit, diced veggies, etc. pretty well. He’s just not consistent. One day at a baseball game we gave him a couple of small bites of a cupcake and he LOVED it and ate it really well. So it was shocking to us when my husband gave him a small piece of muffin that he gagged and threw up! So I’m scared to move forward and give him things like grilled cheese, bread, cookies, etc.

Aidan is now on Pediasure. He doesn’t get formula any more. He really likes the Pediasure. I’m wondering about allergies too but again, it’s not consistent. This past week he had a runny nose and has 6 teeth coming in at the same time, so I’m wondering if this has anything to do with the week he had of random throwing up. He doesn’t have a fever, or rash, or diarrhea (though he did have one "runny" poopy diaper during that week), or anything else that would cause alarm.

This kid has so many specialists that I can’t keep them all straight. Our main issue right now is to get him to gain weight and to figure out this sensitive gag issue.

I’ll keep you all posted as I hear more news from his pedi and endo...and nutritionist (and occupational therapist)!
