re: Childcare

After my youngest was diagnosed which lead to my 2 year old being diagnosed, my husband decided to stay home to care for my boys.  We made the decision to keep my older son in "school" (a medium sized day-care center) 2 days a week- he LOVES it there (Tommy had attended this center from the time he was 10 weeks old).  I feel very fortunate because both the Director of the center and a "teacher" in the infant room have first hand experience with chronic health conditions in children- they are a Mom and daughter team that lost a son/brother to CF. After Tommy was diagnosed w/ SW Adrenal Insuff- I had a "training" class with his teachers- provided them with a number of handouts, including multiple charts from Carol M’s book, and showed them how to give an injection if needed (they have both extra pills and his injectable medicine on site).

I am comfortable with the decision that we have made and feel that he is in good hands- I do get more frequent calls from school if they think he is a little "off"- but this I don’t mind- it is comforting to me to know that they really are aware of Tommy’s "situation".  In fact, my husband who has been home for approx 5 months now is getting the "itch" to go back to work so both boys will be in child care!
