GwenMy sons’ endo originally prescribed the Sodium Chloride solution for my younger son- but due to cost (about 80 bucks out of pocket- my health insurance wouldn’t cover it) and my son’s intolerance of it (I had to administer it via a NG tube- he threw it up everytime we gave it to him via mouth)- he suggested switching to non-iodized table salt. He calculated the correct amount that my son needed on a daily basis (it was equivalent to the amount he was taking through his NG tube), and gave me a recipe of 1/2 t salt to be mixed in with every 20 oz of formula prepared. This was a life saver! My son tolerated the mixture well- so we were able to remove the NG tube- and his labs (at first we were getting BMP done 1x a week) improved! On the saline solution his NA levels were always between 133-135 but once we switched how we were supplementing his sodium, his levels increased to around 140- and have held pretty steady at that number. Now that Johnny is almost 9 months- we continue the salt in the formula, but we also add table salt to his baby food and have never had a problem.
