I am guessing that CVS is the preferred way to screen for CAH.. IF there is already a child with CAH in the family (son or daughter of pregnant mother already diagnosed)
CVS is an expensive test and can be risky the way an amnio can be risky but... it was exactly the test I needed to find out ASAP if baby #2 (now 5 yrs old) was a girl with CAH. The ONLY reason we needed to know status of unborn was so that we would know if I could stop taking the dex or keep taking the dex.
Unaffected male -- stop the dex
affected male -- stop the dex
unaffected female - stop the dex
affected female -- continue the dex in hopes of reducing (not preventing but reducing) the "ambiguity" of the female genetalia organs.
I started taking dex as soon as I knew I was pregnant. It didn’t take long for the complications to begin... high blood pressure to be exact, which then required bed rest etc. I was taking the dex Just In Case baby # 2 was a girl with CAH.
A huge advantage to CVS is that it can be done earlier on in the pregnancy so that a person ( like me ) that was not doing well on the dex could maybe taper down to no dex much sooner.
