I’m a 42-year-old adult male with non-salt wasting CAH (21-hydroxylase deficient). Being able to have children was a concern my entire life. While my long-time endocrinologist assured me my fertility would not be effected by CAH, or my long-term steroid use, I remained skeptical. Well, I am pleased to report that I have three wonderful, healthy children, none of home have CAH. All are, of course, carriers.
Here were the recommendations I received when my wife and I decided to try to get her pregnant:
1. If passing on CAH to your children is an issue for you, have your boyfriend tested to determine the EXACT genetic mutation he carries. I did. Then, we had my wife tested to determine what, if any, mutations she had. She had none, so we knew it was very, very unlikely any kids w/CAH. That
