Osteoperosis

My 10-year old son was on a level of dexamethasone way beyond anything realistic. This went on for some time. I think he may have developed osteoperosis.  I had him get a bone density test, but our endo told me to disregard the results (osteopenia), as it was not a pediatric bone density test. My endo says that any osteoperosis should resolve itself. My question is: how long would it take for any brittle bones to resolve itself? Also, should I be giving my son calcium supplements? Should I persue a pediatric bone density test to determine if he actually has osteoperosis?
