YIkes! I’ve never heard of osteoporosis "resolving itself"!! Then again, I’m not a doctor.... Still, as a parent, I certainly would want to get to the bottom of this, and also get a second opinion, as we know how serious ANY broken bones can be for CAH kids.

Our 12 yr old son (non CAH) had a severe milk allergy, so he’s had to take calcium supplements his entire life to avoid low bone density. We have him tested every few years (on a "regular" machine, I might add) to see if his bone density is OK ... so far, so good. After talking with a dietician or two, we give him 1000 mg per day (he does get some calcium from other foods) broken into 2 doses: no more than 500 mg at a time, or your body can’t absorb it properly. It’s also better absorbed on a full stomach and you must give a Vitamin D supplement as well, as your body uses Vit. D to process the calcium, or much of the calcium will be flushed out of the body. And, of course, weight bearing exercise is important in building strong bones, too. There’s also bone building drugs like Fosomax, that can help if your son truly does have osteoporosis. I would talk to a dietician before you start this though, as it might be different for your son according to his bone density, weight, proximity to puberty, etc. A dietician can give you more accurate information.

I imagine your son is still laying down calcium in his own bones, becauses that’s what our bodies do at that age! But I also can’t imagine a supplement would be a bad thing if he’s got some "catching up" to do. I’d get another opinion - either a pediatrician or GP - and then get some guidelines from a dietician. Good luck .... and thank God you’re aware of this early on!

Blessings
