They should have asked your permission to take photos! I would have refused most definitely. That is private and should stay private, even for the sake of "science".

My mother in law suggested taking pictures of our daughter before she had surgery at 13 months so she could see what she looked like when she was born. I thought that was rather unnecessary to say the least and needless to say we never did it.
