KristinMy son was not diagnosed with CAH until he was 3. He is an odd case because he definitely has SWCAH but he "flew under the radar" for 3 years, which is pretty unheard of. Of course, he was plenty sick during his first 3 years but the Drs always seemed to find just the right thing to get him better until the next sickness (which I now know was probably an adrenal crisis).
Anyhow - that being said - he finally got diagnosed at 3 when I commented that he was starting to grow pubic hair. His Ped. was more concerned with the size of his penis. He was bigger than my stepson, who was 9 at the time. Of course, I figured that my stepson was just small because my son was perfect ;)
Because he went undiagnosed for so long, he has other complications (advanced bone growth, etc.). His doctors do examine his testes at every visit for the mere fact that they are making sure they haven’t grown, which is a sign of puberty. We are expecting him to enter puberty shortly (he is 7 now), which means we will have to supress it until he is mentally ready.
The hospital we go to is a teaching hospital so they have, on occasion, asked if a resident can be present for the examination. I have agreed because it has always been done in private with only one student present. I don’t think I would feel comfortable having a group of people there. My doctors have never asked to take a photograph and I wouldn’t allow it if they asked. Kenny has become very self conscious of people looking at him now and I know that would make him uncomfortable.
Best wishes,
Kristin
