MicheleCongratulations! Let me first direct you to two excellent sources of information about CAH. Sign on to the CARES website. www.caresfoundation.org. You’ll find great info there. Also, there is an excellent book, just recently published. Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, A Parents’ Guide, by C.Y. Hsu and Scott A. Rivkees, M.D. It is available on Amazon. We have 3 children, 2 with SWCAH, one girl and one boy. Our daughter is 15 and is a jock. She excels in sports, is tough as nails, and yet female in every way. No she never played much with dolls, and has always hated bows and frilly dresses. But she’s as femminine as ever, and right now is boy crazy! She’s only ever had a solucortef shot once, but we have it with her everywhere she goes. She was sick a lot as a baby, with many hospital stays, until she built up some immunities. She just didn’t bounce back quickly from colds or ear infections. It just seemed like it always snowballed into something else. But after age 4, she had fewer hospital stays and less illness in general. Our son has had very few hospital stays and rarely gets sick. So a lot of it just depends on the child, and how they respond to sickness, independent of their CAH.
I would be happy to talk to you any time and feel free to keep asking questions. I check the board every day, and hope that my 15 years of dealing with CAH can help make your life a little easier. It really does get easier, and these children can live wonderful, normal, healthy lives. Congratulations again. Michele
