KatrinaTonia,
I have a nine-year-old SWCAH daughter, and I also happen to be a teacher. I would NEVER set up an IEP for my daughter.
In our school corporation students with an IEP are required to have a resource period, which assists them in organization of their materials before going home, a chance to get help on homework, etc. I do not believe all students with an IEP need this time, and they are missing some really great enrichment opportunities such as art classes, speech/debate, choir, etc.
Just this year I have started to teach in a gifted program-sounds perfect for Braydensmom and her son ;)- and we are not able to accept students with an IEP, because we are not staffed with special needs teachers. If anything, I would do as others have suggested, and look into a 504 plan. Your goal is to protect, not limit your daughter.
Also, I agree with others. The school is not acting aggressively enough about your concerns. If this were my daughter, I would demand to speak with the adults in charge. If you aren’t getting answers at the building level, move on up the chain of command. Someone WILL listen! Bullying in schools is a huge legal liability, and someone in your school corporation knows that! GOOD LUCK!!!
