re: Carriers of CAH

Liz, like you, I have SW-CAH. I have 4 children, all carriers. My husband is not a carrier. My understanding of genetics goes like this:

1. Mom has CAH, Dad does not and is not a carrier: children will be carriers. Same deal if it is reversed (Dad has CAH and Mom does not and is not a carrier), the children will be carriers.

2. Mom has CAH, Dad is a carrier: each child will either have CAH or be a carrier. Same here, if Dad has CAH and Mom is a carrier, each child will either have CAH or be a carrier.

3. Mom and Dad are carriers (this will effect your grandchildren). The possibilities are:
A. Completely unaffected (25% chance). Inherited the "good" gene from each parent.
B. Carrier (50%). Inherited one "good" gene (either mom or dad) and one "bad" gene (either mom or dad).
C. CAH (25%). Inherited the "bad" gene from each parent.

I hope this helps. Congratulations on your little girl.

Sheila
