re: Calculating Dex dose

Cassy,

To figure out how much of the dex elixir to give, if you are giving an equivalent of 0.25 mg/m2/day (which is an average dex dose):

1. Find your daughter’s "m2" (which stands for "meters-squared"). You can find this number, by plugging in her height and weight on one of those BSA calculators online (sounds like you have already found one.)

2. Multiply the value you get for "m2" by "0.25." This will give you the total number of "mg" ("milligrams") of dex, that your daughter should have each day. E.g. If the "m2" is 1.2, then your daughter will need 1.2 x 0.25 = 0.3 mg of dex each day.

3. To figure out how much of the dex elixir you need, multiply the answer you get above (i.e. 0.3 mg) by 10. In the example above, this will mean that the person should get 0.3 x 10 = 3.0 ml. of the dex elixir. (ml is the same as cc, so the person will be getting 3.0 cc of the dex elixir).

WORD OF CAUTION: You wrote above that the dex elixir was 5 mg/5 ml in strength. PLEASE check the bottle. More than likely, it actually says 0.5 mg/5 ml. If it doesn’t say that, the dose needed will only be 1/10th the amount above, so pls. let us know if that is the case.

Hope this is not too confusing...if you need any additional help with the actual numbers, please holler!
