re: worried about son

Hi Bonnie,  I too was worried about my son’s growth, so don’t think it is a trivial concern, although I too appreciate there are others with worse problems!  Bone ages are just an indication and not always a good guide -  it certainly wasn’t in my sons case.  You say your son has only just started puberty - from my experience, that is a better guide.  My son didn’t start puberty until the age of 13 and that is when his growth really took off.  He grew almost 2cms a month for the next 2 years (over 4 inches a year) before his growth started slowing down again.  If the same happens with your son, this would bring him to 5ft 7" at age 14, so the predicted height of 5ft 9" certainly sounds possible to me, as the extra couple of inches will then be gained more gradually over the next few years.  Your son obviously has good genetic potential, considering his parents heights and although he may have lost an inch or two of this (as do most children with CAH) , I would be very surprised if he didn’t still reach a good height, on the evidence you have supplied.

I would however advise you to keep an eye on the bone age but remember that growth isn’t complete in a boy until the bone age  reaches 18.2 years (under the SW2 system), so your son still has over 4 years growth left (assuming this is the method under which his bone age is read?).
