LOL, take a lesson from us Yanks, a name is only as bad as you imagine it. We still confound the world by never getting offended at any name we’re called. Quai Lo, Gringo, Yank, it still doesn’t change who we are.

Remember the origins of the word Yank or Yankee. During the American War for Independence the British started calling the (then) colonists, Yankees, which was a mispronunciation of the Native American yenglees, which was in turn a mispronunciation of "English". The British even made up a song to ridicule the colonists, Yankee Doodle. But having built a culture antithetical to the predominant caste-like system of most of Europe (at the time), the Americans actually took pride in being humble (as oxymoronic as that may sound) So the Americans not only adopted the name Yankee but sang Yankee Doodle, without changing the words, as their own rallying cry.

The idea stuck and few Americans actually get offended by being considered "common" (an insult in most of Europe and Asia). Therefore neither "Yank", "Gringo", "Quai lo" or any other epithets tossed at Americans in general, actually won’t offend your typical American. We simply do not care. The philosophy of rugged individualism is too firmly ingrained.

We define who we are, no one else.

So we also tend to not get why others get worked up over names.
