Susan A.Dear Ariel and Karla, My experience with pregnancy may be different than yours. I have CAH - but at the time I did not know to even have my husband tested to see if he was a carrier. I took my regular .5 of dexamethasone daily - that I take for my CAH. I did not take extra steroids. I guess my husband wasn’t a carrier - because our daughter was not born with CAH (though they didn’t do newborn screening in Washington State at that time). When my daughter was 10 I did have an x-ray done of her wrist (her bone age was normal) and they did a 17 hydroxyprogesterone test as well - it was normal. My daughter is 5’8" and I am 5’2".
Usually your doctor puts you on dexamethasone until it is determined if the baby is a boy or girl - then if it’s a boy you can wean off of it - if a girl you will need to take it the whole pregnancy.
I’m so sorry to hear of the death of your child. What a sad story! My heart goes out to you.
As far as taking the dexamethasone during my pregnancy - and I even breastfed for over two years - my daughter is very healthy - always has been. There haven’t been any bad effects for my daughter.
I wish the best for both of you. Congratulations on your pregnancy!
