re: Dexamethasone while pregnant Dec. 12th, 2002 5:13am
Hi Michelina
Congratulations on your pregnancy, I hope it goes well this time for you. Our eldest daughter is almost 4 and has SWCAH. We have two other daughters aged 2 and 9 months, both non-CAH. I took dex with the second and third pregnancies and had no problems at all, other than weight gain and sleeplessness. I can understand the situation you are in, and I have to admit that I was quite worried about the effects of dex on the non-CAH child during those first few weeks of pregnancy (until we found out that they were non-CAH). I am fairly sure that I wouldn't take the dex throughout the whole pregnancy if there was a chance that the child was non-CAH. As the treatment is reasonably 'new', there may not have been enough time to determine if there are any side effects on non-CAH babies who are treated with the dex. There would also possibly be effects on you as the mother which may be detrimental to your health. On the other hand, the whole surgery issue is best avoided if possible, so I don't envy the position that you have been placed in. I haven't heard anything before about miscarriage being a side effect of the dex or of any other mothers having had similar problems.
