re: New CAH baby

Hi Jodie - congratulations on the birth of your daughter!  I agree it is difficult explaining CAH to people  and although I agree with Joanne that Garry Warne's book is excellent and explains the condition well, I personally would not show it to anyone outside my family.  Although not ashamed, I  want to protect my daughter and do not feel that everyone needs to know about the genital enlargement - for her sake, as some things stick in people's minds and are not properly understood!  I  explain it as an 'enzyme deficiency' of the adrenal gland, and likened it to diabetes but they lose salt instead of sugar.  I know this is a very vague and not exactly a 'correct' description but people seem to accept it easily, whereby if you start trying to explain about cortisol, aldosterone and androgens, they are lost!

Pam
