re: CAH and drugs banned in sports
May. 6th, 2003   4:24am

Hi Jane

Our CAH daughter is only 4 so we have not had to deal with this issue yet, however I have always been concerned that this could be a very important issue should she excel at her chosen sport (if she chooses to plays sport of course).  I come from a very sporting family so it is an important part of our lives.  A couple of years ago there was a Rugby League player from Sydney who returned a positive drug test and as it turned out he has a medical condition where his pituitary gland is damaged and he needs to take cortisone on a regular basis.  At the time of testing the results indicated that he had an excess of cortisone in his body and he was therefore hauled before the League for a 'please explain'.  His biggest mistake was not informing the League and whoever else needs to be informed, and it did create a lot of controversy in the media and public.  He was not suspended from competition and still continues to play today.  Even though he needs this medication to live, there was a lot of people who were saying that he should not be allowed to play Rugby League because of this medication.  It will always be a controversial topic I guess and one that we may all have to deal with at some time in the future.

Jenni
