My SW son is 6 and he has also only had 1 crisis in his life and that was with rotovirus at 3.  He has had the solucortef shot a few times mainly with vomiting as he couldn't keep his meds down but other than that we've only had to double his dose.  I too have always mixed his tablets with water when he was a newborn and as he got a bit older (about 18 months) I just gave them to him and he chewed them up.  I was always concerned about giving it to him with anything sweet.  The upside of getting them used to the bitter taste is they will take any medicine you need to give them without any worries no matter how foul they taste!  It is definately very overwhelming at first but the ol cliche it does get easier in time!  Best of luck and keep asking those questions it's how we've all learnt!
