HYSONE (HYDROCORTISONE) 4mg AND 20mg TABLET

SUPPLY UPDATE

NOVEMBER 2007

 

 

The following information is provided to assist in the management of your patients taking HYSONE tablets.  Please contact Alphapharm Information on 1800 028 365 if more details are required.

 

 

HYSONE 4mg Tablets

 

 

The reformulated HYSONE 4mg tablet will be commercially available from 9 November 2007.  We have advised all pharmacies of this development, and how to order new stock.  We expect normal supply of HYSONE 4mg tablets to be fully in place by the middle of November.

 

 

HYSONE 20mg Tablets

 

 

Unfortunately we are still some way off being able to supply HYSONE 20mg commercially.  It is unlikely that a normal supply situation will be in place for 4 to 6 months.

 

There are three possible options that could be used to overcome the 20mg out of stock situation that Alphapharm can suggest:

 

1.  Transfer patients using 20mg tablets to 4mg HYSONE tablets

 

2.   Transfer patients using 20mg HYSONE tablets to an alternative oral steroid.  The Council of the Endocrine Society of Australia provides the following advice regarding approximate dose equivalency of other oral steroid presentations:

"Although not precisely equivalent, 20mg of HYSONE could reasonably be replaced by 25mg cortisone acetate or 5mg prednisone or 5mg prednisolone."

 

3.  If neither of the above options can be achieved without significantly jeopardising the patient's health, applying to the TGA to use imported UK stock of 20mg tablets under the provisions of the Special Access Scheme (SAS) may be an option.  This would involve completing a one page form and faxing to the TGA on an individual patient basis, according to TGA regulations.

 

Alphapharm has a small stock of UK sourced 20mg hydrocortisone tablets, which can be provided only after approval of an individual patient SAS request.

 

Once a completed SAS form is received, we can dispatch this stock to a nominated pharmacy.
