Hi Gail, CAH is a genetic condition and you don't grow out of it. Are you sure the doctor didn't say Adrenal Hypoplasia, not Hyperplasia? Hypoplasia can be genetic too and therefore uncurable but can also just mean under-development of the adrenal glands. The consultant was right to give you an emergency injection kit as your daughter is on hydrocortisone and whilst she is taking the medication, is dependant on it. If they decide she doesn't need it after all, she will be weaned off it slowly but whilst taking it, if she becomes seriously ill, she may need the injection. The only endocrinologist at Sheffield Children's that I know is Dr Jerry Wales. It is a good hospital though, so I don't doubt your daughter is receiving good care. I do however feel you should ask a few more questions as you should have a diagnosis by now. If they are uncertain, suggest the DNA test - it is not routinely offered everywhere, due to high cost. Push for it though, it is available on the NHS and should give you some answers.
