mild but still horriblec.a.h. symptoms-depression and weight gain
May. 9th, 2004   5:22pm

Hi could anyone help me? I have recently found out that c.a.h. runs in my family and varies enormously in the way it presents. I am a carrier with no symptoms but I have heard of a case of a woman who is only a carrier manifesting lots of the typical symptoms. I have an eight year old nephew who has symptoms and is being treated. I also have a young adult neice who has the full condition but no symptoms at all except for unexplained weight gain. She has had no problem conceiving and has had her first child with no difficulty. Her weight gain was not due to treatment as she has never been treated.

I am most concerned for my own 18 year old daughter who has no obvious symptoms. She is not diagnosed and will be tested shortly. However, she was off the chart regarding growth in length, weight and head circumferance as a baby and hormonal treatment was discussed but not carried out. Now, however, she is 5ft6ins. which is fine. She has never been treated for c.a.h.

She has very painful and irregular periods and although an exceptionally slim child she has gained weight at a ridiculous rate since puberty which began at the early (but not unusually so) age of 11. This shows no sign of slowing down and makes her terribly unhappy. She also suffers from depression and self harms when she's very down. Obviously, her weight gain cannot be put down to treatment.

I have heard that polycystic ovaries leadfing to insulin insensitivity can be related to c.a.h. and can trigger weight gain. Has anyone been successfully treated for this or have any experience or advice to offer.

Thank you for reading this, love, Damien.

Damien
