re: Dexamethasone
Jun. 26th, 2005   11:26am

Hi Anne,  Dexamethasone is the least used steroid to treat CAH in the UK, mainly due to it's potency and therefore the difficulty in fine-tuning the dose.  It used to be thought that it was 40 times the strength of hydrocortisone, but more recently recognised as actually being equivalent to double this (80:1).  This could be why you were overtreated for so many years.

I know the treatment of choice amongst consultants tends to be either hydrocortisone or prednisolone (and this works very well for the majority of patients) but there are adults who actually prefer dexamethasone.  If you felt better on dex, couldn't your consultant have tried gradually reducing the dose until it was at a more appropriate level rather than changing your medication altogether?

Sue
