re: re: re: new to the site, daughter with cah just changed to adult endos, not sure if likes new consultant , Sep. 19th, 2006 9:44am
Alder Hey is an extremely good centre for care of CAH children, so I am not surprised you were a little dissapointed with the change to an adult clinic. Unfortunately some doctors do appear arrogant and patronising but do remember that 'nice' is not always 'best' and although this new doctor may lack in communication skills and manner, he just may be able to help Sarah and get her under good control. You mention he has started her on Metformin, so he is obviously not complacent and feels she needs a change in meds - perhaps you should give him another chance and see how the next appointment turns out (maybe he was having a bad day?) Don't let him talk down to you though, give him a dose of his own medicine and be assertive and demanding yourself - he just may respect you for it!
If your daughter really doesn't get on with this guy though, speak to her GP - you can request a second opinion elsewhere. She does need to feel comfortable and able to talk to her doctor but as I said before sometimes the nice, laid back doctors are not really interested, will tell you everything is 'great' which may sound encouraging and reassuring but if not really true is far more damaging than an arrogant doctor, who questions diet etc, making your feel inadequate but really only asking these questions in the hope of helping her improve her life/health.
