re: might have late onset cah
May. 28th, 2007   10:22pm

Hi Dee, It does sound possible you have late on-set CAH, which is often misdiagnosed as POS.   The high 17OHP level is indicative as are your other symptoms and the further tests mentioned  should give you a definate diagnosis.   Try and be reassured that the endocrinologist is probably on the right track and with glucocorticoid treatment your hormone levels should normalise.  Hopefully this should enduce regular periods and in turn fertility can be restored.

Glucocorticoid replacement therapy should be in the form of either hydrocortisone or prednisolone tablets for a woman trying to achieve pregnancy.  These are steroids which the body is usually able to produce naturally but in CAH production is impaired, hence the need to take tablets orally.  Although this probably sounds a bit scary, I am sure it must also be a relief to realise there is a reason for your infertility, hirsuitism, irregular periods, infertility etc, which with the correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment can be sorted out!

Good luck!

Sue
