There is an alternative recognised company to Medic-alert in the UK called Medi-tag - http://www.hoopers.org/Meditag.asp, which do a few different emblems including watches.  As already stated though, the most important thing is the message but I do agree the selection isn't great and the price of these essential medical items is far from cheap!  If in hardship though, Medic-alert to provide these emblems for a nominal  fee (£10) with proof (i.e. you need to be receiving some sort of social security benefit).
