My 2 and 1/2 year old girl has recently been quite interested in her genitals. I know with potty training and the age it is normal but she recently pulled her labia apart and said "What is this?" (referring to the bit large clitoris) When I explained to her it was her clitoris and part of her vagina she said "I don't like it, I don't want to wear it, I want to cut it off". Her father and I were quite taken aback. There are a few things underlying the situation. One, she has had the surgery and her clitoris, although smaller is still a large "bulb" and protrudes more than most. Two, she was a little bit red at the time and we had changed her diapers to the pull-ups and it might be rubbing and uncomfortable after she pees. Three, she is very sensitive (and I know this sounds like a weird possible connection) to tags in her shirt and often says she doesn't want to wear them and wants to cut them off. I don't think she sees anyone else at day-care to compare but I could ask to be sure, I just don't know how far to go or how concerned to be.
Maybe what I did was wrong but I told her that all girls had a clitoris and the next time I went to the bathroom (she often comes into the bathroom with me even after saying "Do you need privacy mommy?! ) I would show her mine. I did and she said "Wow, Mommy, yours is BIG...mine is little" and seemed to be okay but today she again said (about hers) "I don't like it".
I don't have any other children and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this or anything similar. Maybe I am paranoid because of the surgery but if anyone has some insight it would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
