chromosomes and gender identity
Feb. 27th, 2005   1:27am

Someone posted below about chromosomes and gender identity and after looking again, I can't find it.

I hope Elyse will pardon me for reposting her child's information that she shared here.

Chromosones don't mean much when it comes to gender identity.  Not all those with XX genes ultimately ID as female and vice versa.  The numbers are small, but hardly insignificant.  For example, women with AIS almost always ID as female but are chromosomally male--XY.

With a CAH girl, suppose there is even the slightest chance your child will ID male regardless of chromosomes.  Elyse posted about her daughter and while it may change---lots of kids ID play as either male or female at some point--it may not.

Is risking what could function as a small penis for those XX "girls" an acceptable risk an assumption that they will be happy with not having it?  Or is it an acceptable risk to wait and let him or her make up their own mind about what they would like their genitals to look and feel like and whether or not to have surgery they can choose on their own?

Why?

Betsy
