re: CAH: Not Alone
Sep. 6th, 2007   11:13am

Hi SC,

It's nice to read something from an adult with CAH.

I'm a 36 year old female that has had CAH since birth and have also had surgery. It is important to tell some of your close friends about your CAH in case you are in an accident and unable to talk. Even though most of my friends didn't seem to understand what I was talking about (I didn't go into the physical aspects of it) they knew to look for my medic alert. My friends that did take the initiative to look online for more information didn't treat me any different.

In regards to sexual relations I can relate. I didn't handle it well when I was in my 20's and only felt comfortable when I and the other person were drunk before we slept together.  I even tried therapy, but the therapist I went to was not familiar with CAH ( I did give her some pamphlets on it)  and could not give very good advice.

Now that I'm older and wiser, lol...My best advice is to be honest and get to know the person you are with before explaining about your CAH. If they seem like a compassionate person and not an oaf than you will feel better about talking about it. You also need to have confidence. If you are uncomfortable than you will also make your significant other uncomfortable. I'm in a relationship now with a person that I plan on spending the rest of my life with. She's read up extensively on my CAH and is always asking questions and has never made me feel uncomfortable.  It's a great feeling.

You'll be fine!
